March Upcountry by David Weber and John Ringo is the first book in the Prince Roger series. Prince Roger is the heir Tertiary, the kingdom of man, and a royal pain to his family and his bodyguards. He is closely associated with the Bronze Battalion of the Empress's own detachment of Imperial Marine guards. Prince Roger is a beautiful playboy who seems to be no redeeming qualities as a prince to be, much to the chagrin of his mother, the Empress.
He is a spoiled rich brat not only that he is the son of a nobleman who was by the court on suspicion of treason away. Roger looks and acts just like his Father, even more worrying, the Empress.
Roger shows sent on a mission to a flag out of the way planet. It is a political storm together, and since Roger political views are unknown Empress decides that it would be better to get him out of the palace. En route sabotaged his ship and he and Bronze Battalion are on the planet Marduk stranded. Marduk is a big steaming jungle with very dangerous and deadly creatures, four-armed locals filled. In addition, animal and plant Life on the planet do not contain the proper vitamins and minerals for human survival.
The kingdom of the enemy, the saints, the control of Stars the only port on the planet. To avoid detection of the Marines to land and Roger must be on the other side of the planet and can not use their entry shuttles for fear of discovery and the lack of fuel. For this reason, you are forced to march on foot all the way across the planet.
The technology has Mardukian black powder discovered in some areas, and in others it is still in the Iron Age. Roger saves a local shaman from death with the killing of a large meat eater that mardukian Version of the cape buffalo is. It turns out that Roger is not the simple airhead that everyone assumes he has spent much of his time, a "Playboy" Hunting large and dangerous animals in the entire galaxy in Safari and is an incredible natural shot.
From then on, the shaman called Cord, it follows about him for a life debt. Not only does the venerable shaman begins teaching Roger, what it means to be a prince. Slowly, Roger begins as a man and his bodyguard begin to grow out on his martial skills and charismatic, to keep them out of tricky situations.
This series is a classic FOP Prince transformed into a man, history, but it still feels very new. The mixture of science fiction and primitive technology seamlessly. The characters are memorable and their Stories are well crafted individually. For those who enjoy good science fiction or already David Weber and / or John Ringo fans I recommend this novel. This novel is an 8 on the It's Geektime d10 of space operas.
