The Basics of Running Shoes for a Beginning Runner
Buying a pair of running shoes can be nightmare, especially if you are a beginning runner who does not know a lot about your feet. Some of this knowledge comes from trial and error. There is no “best” brand of running shoes; different brands work better for different people. You may need to try a few pairs before you’ve finally settled on a brand or style that consistently works well for you.
The first step is to get familiar with your feet. Again, some of this knowledge will come from regular running. But there are a few steps you can take as a newbie to get yourself going in the right direction. The first is to re-measure your feet. Feet do change size, and so you will want to make sure that you are actually the size you think you are. You can do this quite simply by tracing your feet with pen and paper. Be sure to wear the socks you are planning to wear with your athletic shoes. Once you are confident that you’ve correctly calculated your Shoe Size, you need to determine your foot “type”. This largely has to do with your arches. Dip your foot in water and place it on a brown paper bag. Examine your footprint. If your foot is a solid block, then you probably have flat feet or fallen arches. High arches will have a “scooped-out” footprint, and normal arches will be somewhere in between.
Armed with your foot size and type, you will need to decide between four basic shoe types: Motion-Control Shoes, Cushioned Shoes, Lightweight Shoes and Trail Shoes. Motion-control shoes are for people with flat feet or who over-pronate (i.e., your foot rolls in too much when you run). This often results in knee pain and a host of other problems. Motion-control shoes vary in the rigidity. It is possible to buy motion-control shoes for people with severe pronation problems and for people who just need a little extra stability and support. Cushioned shoes offer a soft fit. They are perfect for people who under-pronate or have high arches. (Feet with high arches tend to be more rigid than normal or flat feet.) Training and racing shoes are both lightweight shoes and should not be used for regular cross-country running. They are probably not appropriate for a beginning runner. Finally, trail shoes offer extra traction for runners who anticipate spending most of their time running on trails or off-road. These thick-sole shoes are durable and should help you stay balanced on your feet.
