The Best Dehydrators Have The Right Stuff
When you are determining which are the best dehydrators for your needs and your budget, you'll want to be sure you understand what "stuff" you want them to have. That is, what features will make dehydrating food a joy rather than a disaster. In this regard, price alone is a very poor indicator of which dehydrators are the best.
So what is the right stuff? Well, any food dehydrator worth buying will have temperature control, but you will also want flexibility in the design, the fan and heater in the ideal location, and something that will be easy to clean when you're finished.
As mentioned above, you shouldn't even consider buying a food dehydrator without temperature control. The difference between having and not having this is the difference between a toaster oven and a toaster. Both can make toast, but only the toaster oven can do much more than that. In other words, if you buy a beef jerky dehydrator without temperature control, all you can really make is beef jerky.
When it comes to temperature control, you may want to look more closely than if it simply has this feature. If you know what you want to make, it is a good idea to research the best temperature for that item and see that your new dehydrator can work in that range. If you are unsure about this, simply look for the unit with the largest range within your budget.
While the temperature range is part of a unit's flexibility, the best dehydrators have even more flexibility built into their design. For example, some manufacturers make expandable units, so you can purchase additional trays and expand the amount of food you can dehydrate in a single session.
Other flexibility factors include availability of non-stick sheets and other accessories that expand the range of food you can dehydrate. For example, some units can accommodate sheets that allow you to make fruit leathers, which are similar to the commercial fruit roll-up products.
Another key feature is the location of the fan and heater. Airflow in a dehydrator is either vertical or horizontal. Vertical airflow has the fan and heater at either the top or bottom of the unit. Horizontal airflow has them in the back or sides.
Both styles have their advantages, so you'll have to decide what is important to you. Vertical airflow dries each tray more evenly, allowing you to avoid rotating the trays during the drying process. This makes it easier to set and forget, even using a timer to shut the machine off when you expect it to be done. However, if the fan and heater are in the bottom, they will quickly get covered in drippings from the food, making cleanup more difficult, so you should look for one where the mechanical parts are in the top.
Horizontal airflow will dry parts of the trays closest to the heat faster than others, but there is less flow from one tray to the next which will keep your flavors from mixing too much if you are drying different food items at the same time.
One of the most important features of all is how easy it is to clean when your done. If it's too hard, it can leave you with a bad taste in your mouth for dehydrating. The easier cleanup is, the less you will dread it and the more likely you are to enjoy all the delicious dehydrated foods you can make.
