Gianni Truvianni Meets Charles Coleman
I am of course aware that many may not know who Charles Coleman, and it is for those who do not To do what I have decided to write this article when he the man partly responsible for my love for opera and classical music, that even the creation of my first book, "New York's Opera Society" lead. Of course, if they are on Charles Coleman, I do so with respect to the New York composer, the way back in 1985 a school friend of mine at "The Tutoring School Of New York" and others was not with the same name as the one that was in the state of Oklahoma for murder in 1990, executed or the famous British painter.
For Charles Coleman should I reference to is the one who has given us many compositions under which "Deep Woods" and "Redemption" with orchestrations of songs such as Jimi Hendrix with "Manic Depressant" Frank Zappa's "Uncle Remus", The Beatles' "Come Together" and some others. Charles Coleman, In addition to displaying talents in composition and arrangement acted as a singer of merit, when he was in a very early age sang soprano at the Metropolitan Opera, performing many tasks, including the child a "Feodor" in Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov".
As for the friendship developed between Charles and me, this began in the fall of 1985 at the beginning of the semester the school in which my senior year and junior Charles was, as he was and is a year younger me. Charles and at first I do not really say much to each other even though we each given the fact that our very small school with only 80 students, and we knew were in the same European history class. The story of the way, one of the few Subjects in school, I was as it had always fascinated me and still good to learn from past events, with effect of today's reality.
It all started one day, and although I remember it being almost at the beginning of the school year, I do not remember exactly when it was in September or October, that our history teacher, was very loud to us talking during class. This is not what he was doing in the rule that he caught himself and said that the reason he did was so because it was a girl in one of his classes, which was hard of hearing. I jokingly at the time suggested he get a megaphone, as Jimmy "the mouth of the South" Hart WWF (World Wrestling Federation), who as a manager in wrestling would use to leave instructions on where under his leadership profile.
It points out that Charles Coleman, as I was shot at the time a fan of the WWF, going at the time perhaps his greatest moment in terms of popularity was he even with a cartoon version that many of its stars at the time as "Hulk" Hogan, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Andre "The Giant", the Junkyard Dog, Big John Stud and presented many others. Charles and I, after this class was talking about wrestling. Something we would do often, if ever allowed time with him everything is a fan of the so-called "good guy" wrestler while I like the "Bay Boys". This may Piper (real name Roderick George Toombs), which was hailed as being free of Glasgow, Scotland, and even wore a kilt to the ring along with playing the bagpipes. All this was in spite of his really born in Canada.
Many would be our discussions on Wrestling, Piper Pit, and who was better or what not and I do also remember Karl nice guy he was lending me a video tape of "WrestleMania I". Since this is a nice touch of his hand, despite the fact that the tape he gave me was in the form and VHS VCR I had then was Betamax, so I will not be able to see it, but it's the thought that meant counted. Actually it was like our fascination with professional wrestling, I started calling Charles "weasel". This is not because of his personality, but its the former WWF manager similar under the name Bobby Heenan. Heenan and those referred to in the world of professional wrestling is often cited along with its other name, "the brain".
It was through our discussions I find that Charles in addition to being a fan of wrestling, and yes, we both knew it was fake but not counted, as we are entertaining despite the lack of authenticity found that we constantly reminded of by our fellow classmates, was a composer of orchestral music. Charles, however, was a quiet person in those days and probably is, who do not talk a lot about his talent. This being the case, although I remember him one day in the garden, which was in the back of our school to take notes. When I approached him to take this opportunity to see what he wrote, I found out about his love for classical music as it was just music that he was to paper almost as simple as writing down words.
By the end of 1985, I could say Charles and I were what is called school friends even though little other are marked, as we had no contact with each other outside of "The cram school." Personality as I remember Charles as soft as spoken many in our school, in contrast, perhaps including myself, were everything, but he do not talk much, especially in the company of many but he always had an opinion about many a problem on the many times that we engaged in conversations. Some of them divert from the topic wrestling to politics included. As this is an issue we are almost Never saw things eye to eye on, as my views on many issues we were talking about closer to the then-President Reagan during his given his family maintained his liberal. In everything we discussed but we have another point of view, even if we often do not contradict respect, as is the case for the right to to burn the flag, which was Oddly, he faced while I was on.
In view of our connection with the opera and classical music, this began one day (January 1986) mentioned, on which Charles and I do not even remember what it did during our history class, he had tickets for this Evening go to see Luciano Pavarotti at the Metropolitan Opera. It was two tickets, that Charles had Pavarotti in the role of Mario Cavaradossi in the opera "Tosca" by to see Puccini, use to no one in the second ticket. I currently do not really asked as opera fan him if he would care to keep me on the second ticket, which he accepted. For my part, but I was not the big opera fan, I'm going now accepted, for the first that I knew his name was like Pavarotti and Domingo were among the one in the opera. I went, because many years ago while, what would my grandmother last visit to the States, I had heard her say to me the wonderful qualities of Pavarotti's voice, which she had shown in me while he sang on television. I even mentioned this particular episode in my life in a another article of mine titled "Pavarotti, You Are Gone But Not Forgotten", which this as well in the net.
Charles is settled and I would have the opera, we agreed to meet at my apartment, for the simple reason that it is closer to the Metropolitan Opera, it was his parents' downtown apartment to go. Charles came on time as I do, he would that night and dressed a little more elegant then he usually has in school, while I wore a jacket and tie, although not expected a suit. Charles on this occasion met a cousin of mine, the very young at the time, nine years old to be exact, which found him very friendly, even said was abandoned as we for the opera.
After Charles and I were outside my house, Charles suggested we take the subway, but I said, rather then take the subway, we should take a taxi. A car that I like for since Charles was the one who is paid, the tickets for this evening outing, the but never of the price I would imagine telling was much higher then the cost of a taxi from the East Side of Manhattan on the West Side. It was actually during in the taxi that Charles took the time to explain to me what the opera, we went to see told me his list, which seemed interesting. Charles, I could say, had seen opera often seemed, and yet they want to see it again, as a true love for the opera, which I would eventually buy, but for that I feared that night was just beginning to know instead.
Charles and I enjoyed the opera, but since I first heard there were moments to my ear found hard to follow. Since this is the case when several parts stuck in my head, like the one in the first act in which Pavarotti sings "Recondita Armonia" or the in the 4th Act in which he sings "E Lucavan Le Stelle". It was these two arias, which has really helped me, the true power and grace of the tenor note like notes came to be alive in a way I had never noticed. All this made me see what opera was. As for the rest of the opera, I found it beautiful and looks at them, more than twenty Years later, I know it has inspired me to listen to more opera. Charles and I then no longer go to opera together and got each other even contact, at least for the next three years.
Until then, the year 1989 and a friend of mine named Rick Page, who even resembled his more famous and older Cousin Jimmy Page (of the rock band "Led Zeppelin") had invited me to his recital at the New York School of Music. Rick, a piano player, I met during the Work at a place called "The Town Club of New York" on 85th Street between 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, having been graduated in composition happened in the above School. This is also the school attended by the two fictional characters from my books, "New York's Opera Society" and "not Matter What."
With my memory serves me well I remember it was sometime in the month of May, when I do a performance of Rick's music in the company of a female visited German Friend of mine who remember, apart from their nationality and sex, I very little about other then the fact that we had what is undoubtedly a plutonic want friendship. Upon arrival in the hall were the show I was from my friend Rick, whose German as fluently as my friend, who had come with me, was welcomed. This leads to them from a conversation in German, which I understood very little of, but it was talking while Rick and my friend that I heard someone next to me: "I can not believe, do not tell Charles Coleman piano players come." I then suddenly put in my head, what could be examined, two and two together thinking in the following way Charles Coleman was a guy I went to school, he studied classical music, this is a school for such music so maybe the Charles Coleman to refer that person is the same, I knew how Wiesel from "The School of Education New York." I soon after what I was going through your head turned to the the person who said this and asked: "Did you Charles Coleman?". This person saw a man with some surprise to me and said, "Yes, I" to which I asked him if he could Charles indicates to me that he did and it was at that moment I saw her again after a long time, "weasel" out of high School.
Of course, I went to Charles and said hello and talked over old times, and I must admit, it was nice to see him, not only because he was someone from my school, but I was still always found memories of those days when we were talking about wrestling. The concert went well, although I did not hear any music of Charles, but I got the chance, Rick's music after which Rick and I went with some of his friends to hear in a bar. Charles and Rick were friends but this evening Charles decided not to join for a drink, for one reason, I do not know.
The name of the place we went to I do not know remember to be honest if I did not pay it any mind, as it was a place I made to was. Many of Rick's friends were there but the one that most Influence on me was a Colombian who is currently studying to be a conductor, was his name and although I was not paying attention I have in terms of what he had to say about the opera. He told me that were contrary to what I had in the United States cultural events like opera intended not only to the rich, as one might in last-minute tickets to more or less the same price to go to the movies and get a greasy burger afterwards. Actually, so was the impression that Colombian gentleman to me made that I have on my character Arturo Gomez basis of my book "New York's Opera Society" him. As for the rest of the evening, it was good enough heard we get up to my friend Rick and sing "Wind Beneath My Wings," along with several other of his friends who also interpreted songs.
As for Charles and I are still friends but rarely have we given our limited time to meet me with my studies in French and photography, while he with his music. Charles would be the one I would every time I had made the purchase of either a classical music CD or Opera, to ask what his opinion of the music was. I was always amazed at how he managed to always have to know the artists on the CDs I bought, as he knew them all personally. Now, what could be a expected man whose ear was so sophisticated that it not only recognize all the classic piece that he heard, but the Philharmonic was playing.
I would for my part in performances of Charles' music, in the year 1990 and in 1993 I found that to be more to my taste Rick's Music, although I can not claim to be a fan of both, although I admire them both for being good to do what they do. Charles and I were on that evening in 1989, again and although we had together back in touch with each other I will never forget the time Charles and I lost. For example was the time her he came to me that they bake cookies, or the times we spend in "The School of Education New York" or specifically in the night, helped the Charles imagine in the world of opera.
The last Time I saw or spoke with Charles Coleman was conducted by telephone in 1993 as time and travel have separated us, although I'm not pregnant, I would not mind seeing again, but Charles for those who want to know more about Charles I going to recommend www.charlescoleman.com . It is there where she be able to read more about the most talented composers, but with no offense it was not much of a pianist. I would go in later years to a brief Friendship with the Polish composer Piotr Rubik develop. He is my neighbor and students at my school English, I would one day invite for Thanksgiving dinner with me at home with the lady who was at that time his girlfriend even though her name is not me today.
