Travellers Insights Dominica
Dominica is about discovery. The majority of the 360 rivers, rainforest and mountains are still unexplored. Sightseeing, trekking, Hiking, scuba diving are among the best in the Caribbean. But Dominica true nature is a gentle calm, quiet in a country of high mountains and raging rivers. Step back in the Time, you're miles away from the modern world and its fast pace, time moves slowly in Dominica and that is the way, as Dominicans.
The Dominicans are generous and hospitable. They respect the land which they have so much, and to the fact that you can get, with very little in Dominica, increase Their own vegetables, keep your own chickens and fish from the banks. Vegetables and fruits grow everywhere. Two large avocados cost me less than a dollar U.S..
are not driven by profit, Dominican inventive, they experiment and do things just for the joy of it. This small population of 70 000 of 290 square miles, makes its own beer, rum and coffee, was for the famous Dominica matting and grapefruit and banana exports in the world. In the valleys Sugar cane is grown, crushed and processed in a high quality Dominica rum.
Dominica's unique quality of life, people are drawn. Gilles, an entrepreneur, French escaped to paradise, as he says, and the Open Sea Lounge with the best French cuisine in the Caribbean, "says Gilles. "I'm to the point where I had taken to my responsibility, got my daughter thought her education and now it was time for me. Dominica challenged because I wanted off the treadmill and do something meaningful, where it might not matter. I like the spirit of the people and the place. "Dinner at Sea Lounge was a highlight. The food was excellent and at the end of the meal served Gilles complementary flavored rum. He says he loves to exceed your expectations!
I came to Dominica to tourism officials to meet and see how we could work with the Tourism Authority and supply technology and marketing services in the island. The first night we met with Etta Deschamps by accident - she was sitting next to us La Maison Creole while we were eating blackened fish and shrimp. She and her husband founded their movie company ZoomFilmCompany.com in Dominica. "The alternative and authentic," she said of Dominica. It has clearly inspired their work.
The travel writer Paul Crask also fell in love. American executives see it for the right reasons and to escape their mountain homes, "It is not overdeveloped," says Colin Piper, Director of the Dominica Tourism Board, "we keep things simple and prefer to preserve the unique experience that is Dominica.
I hope that Dominica no other to Antigua, Barbados and St. Lucia, where hotels and condominiums are to be everywhere. It is not your typical Caribbean beach holiday destination. There are several white Sandy beaches in the north, but the land is private property and the developers are not in droves, not because it wants to tear down the international airport and no one to build a mountain.
The streets are narrow and often steep with many switchbacks. It takes half an hour from the airport to Roseau, the capital drive - 27 miles. It is not highway driving, They are the driving idea of the jungle, sometimes a rainforest or a banana plantation on the edge of a mountain with a panoramic view of the sea coast.
They come to escape and regenerate Dominica in nature. Paddling to Indian River takes you to a new place of tranquility and character. It is Dominica - the nature of the island, a short moment to escape, you take your foot off the accelerator and enjoy the tranquility of nature as you paddle on the River. The steady rhythm of the paddles dipping into the water, is almost hypnotic, it is very reassuring. In this island you will be in the comfort of a boutique hotel, elegant sleep without exaggeration or climb in your holiday home in the treetops in Jungle Bay Resort.
Sitting on the ocean front balcony at Calibishie Cove, with the wind in your face is the essence of relaxation. I felt my spirit to let go physically, a mountain of thinking and for the first time in weeks I began to relax. Hazel, the caretaker was the perfect host and peas cooked with coconut rice, chicken and large with the provisions we had brought. Calibishe Cove has both apartments and suites without kitchen. We had a deluxe suite with adjoining rooms and wrap-around balcony posted. It has no kitchen, which was great was, Hazel's cooking better. The breakfast was delivered by van, with a broad smile and fresh orange juice courtesy of Helen.
We took the opportunity to walk the 200 steps to the estuary and the beach below our suite. Trevor and his son joined us on the beach. Trevor, a boxing Champ from the United Kingdom, moved to Dominica a few years ago. The steps to the river, sea and natural barriers made of tree trunks and low-hanging trees to have the perfect gym. He came to Dominica away from the rush, he wanted to start a Boxing Association, but now plans to train boxers on the island. "If the best education in my life here, "he said," You know, it's the conditioning of your mind makes the difference, you unplug Dominica. "His agent He had a fight back in the UK with good price-performance ratio. "I would not, as I was completely taken out of practice "He tells us. But Dominica's Magic had made his mind sharp, running on the beach and tinted shadow boxing had on him. He scored a knockout in round one.
We were traveling around the island by taxi. It seemed the best way that we could concentrate on the pictures and notes, but in retrospect would I rent a car. A 4x4 Sidekick rent for U.S. $ 40.25 per day. A taxi is much more, and you don not have the freedom to head off in your own direction or stop for out a snack on a whim to just sit and watch and enjoy the scene. Our taxi driver was a 27-year-old Dominican with a family with two girls and a boy. He was looking forward to the Titiwi picnic and BBQ on Sunday. We made a trip around the island in two days from Roseau, driving south to Scots Head, then over the mountains to jungle bay and the Carib Territories, hold in more for the night Calibishie.
We arranged to be picked up at 11 on Sunday and drove Next to Fort Shirley at Portsmoth. The fort has been beautifully restored by a project of Dr. Lennox Honeychurch line. Lennox is a poet and a historian. I read his prose across the ocean a few years ago and I still remember his being. It inspired some of what I wrote. "March on, Oh! Rolling Sea, with your messages of time".
On the way back we stopped at the Roseau Titiwi Festival at Layou. The Titiwi are a kind of small eels. They are roasted, put in baking, steamed, smoked or cooked in the Creole style cuisine - very fishy more like anchovy, a delicacy of cooked breadfruit, Bello's Hot Sauce and Kabuli beer. What I was most impressed by the friendly people and their warm hospitality.
Dominica Dominica Festival and fish fish and bake island creole cuisine
What do you notice in Dominica is the color, bright and lively, but never garish. Nature is rich in color. Along the streets of wild flowers spread a carpet of red, blue, White and yellow on a green carpet. The towns and villages are alive with bright green, yellow, red and blue all, and in the fishing villages and for the Fishing boats are well maintained painted with personality.
Pink fishing boats say as much about the owner than on the boat! This is an island of the individual, on the personal choice and the determination to be different. It is for the discerning traveler who is not the typical tourist. It is, and I hope it will always be, an undiscovered Treasure away in time, where old fashioned values modified hidden.
